The surrounding country is dry and receives irregular seasonal rainfall. It is quite shallow, less than three meters (10 feet) deep, and varies in width depending on its water level, which changes due to high levels of evaporation, leaving concentrations of salt and other minerals, notably sodium carbonate (natron). The lake is fed by the Southern Ewaso Ng'iro River and also by mineral-rich hot springs. Lake Natron is a salt lake located in northern Tanzania, close to the Kenyan border, in the eastern branch of the East African Rift.
